Sometimes you need to take a step back before you can move forward. A forced slowdown or even standstill - like we experienced it during the 2020 pandemic - can be frustrating but it can also be an opportunity to rethink one’s own position and it can encourage you to explore new avenues. For our newly formed alumni association, it proved to be a real challenge, destroying all our plans for big events with our growing community. However, we used the time to work on our services and to plan new event formats for next year. With our minds full of ambitious ideas, we look forward to an exciting year with many new encounters and interactions with our members.
Wishing you a very happy holiday season and a joyful and prosperous new year,
Development of Several Event Series
Our network thrives on encounters and interaction between its members at the interface between research and business. Therefore, ECON Alumni has launched or has come up with several event series this year to promote this exchange.
- ECONnect: Meet opinion leaders from business and politics, get access to current topics and exchange ideas with like-minded people at the apero followed by a keynote speech. Posponed to Q2 2021 due to pandemic.
- PhD Career Paths: Former PhDs of the Department of Economics talk to current PhD and Master students about their career paths, sharing their experiences, underlining what they deemed to be important, and acting as first contact person for students who seek a similar career path.
- Meet the Profs: Students have the opportunity to get to know their professors, learn about their topics of interest, and have an informal discussion with them.
- Lunch Talks: Companies associated with the department introduce themselves and show possible career paths for economists. Planned for Q2 2021.
ECON Alumni Webpage
In spring we created our new website. There you can find all information about our activities, you have access to our career services, and you can browse through our member directory and (re)connect with your fellow alumni.
Change of Membership Fee
To encourage all students to become members of ECON Alumni UZH, not only during their studies, but also to remain active members after their studies, when the free membership ends, the board has decided to suspend all membership fees from the beginning of 2021.
With this step, all members, regardless of their status, will also be entitled to vote at the general meeting.
13.10.20 - PhD Career Paths Event with Swiss Re
Giacomin Favre, Graduate Economic Valuation Analyst, and André Volk, Data Analysis Lead, talked about their careers and presented Swiss Re as a potential employer for economics graduates.
3.11.20 - Meet the Profs with Roberto Weber
Roberto shared his personal story about how he came to study economics, what were the most important experiences and successes in his life so far, and why he is fascinated by behavioural economic research.
